What is an Ostomy ?
Ostomies are surgical procedures that create an opening (stoma) on the abdomen for the drainage of stool from the large intestine (colon). An ostomy is named for the portion of the digestive tract or urinary tract that is brought to the surface. Colon (large intestine) brought to the surface is called a colostomy. When the portion of the small intestine known as the ilium is connected to the surface, the connection is called an ileostomy. Ostomies may be necessary because of conditions such as cancer, inflammatory bowel disease or a neurologic disorder. These procedures are usually done after bowel resections or injuries and it may be temporary or permanent. Even though it may seem difficult at first, your ability to manage an ostomy will improve over time. In all ostomies the bowel movements fall into a collection pouch. Our staff will help you find the exact equipment that you need to manage your ostomy. Give Tim or one of our other pharmacists a call at (405)273-9417 with questions or needs.
